BOOKED OUT - Great Blasket Island & Eco-Marine Tour



The Kerry Branch are delighted to announce our first ever branch showcase event. We hope to organise showcase events on an annual basis in order to show and enjoy the amazing wildlife experiences that are available in our beautiful county.

This years event is a day long guided tour of Great Blasket Island & a Marine tour with Ventry based operator Eco-Marine tours.

Background

The Blasket islands are an SPA [Special Protected Area] - for birds - as well as a marine and terrestrial SAC [Special Area of Conservation]. On the Great Blasket island itself there is a large population of Irish Mountain Hare, unique indigenous plant life and large colonies of seabirds. Some of the bird species to be seen around the various islands include Storm Petrels, Manx Shearwaters, Fulmars, Puffins, Shags, Peregrines, Choughs, Wheatears, Kittiwakes and Razorbills. In the waters surrounding the Islands Minke Whales, Basking Sharks are regularly encountered as well as grey Seals and Dolphins.


Itinerary

  • 07:50 Meet bus at Brandon Car Park and depart for Ventry
  • 10:00 Depart Ventry Harbour on tour boat
  • 11:00 Land on Great Blasket Island (SAC) for guided island walk with Britta Wilkens and Lunch
  • 14:00 Pickup from Island begin Eco Marine Tour. Travel to known feeding spots of Minke Whales, Basking Sharks and Dolphins. Observe Sea birds colonies nesting on cliffs from the water
  • 17:00 Arrive back in Ventry Harbour
  • 17.30 Depart Ventry on bus for Tralee
  • 19:00 Arrive back at the Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre

Sunday 13th July (Preferred) with a fallback date of Sunday 20th July in case weather conditions are unsuitable on the preferred date.
